Flavored Cigarettes Ban by FDA

September 22nd, 2009 · No Comments

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has shown new signs of regulating the tobacco industry by placing a federal ban on flavored cigarettes effective September 22, 2009.

This means that it is illegal to manufacture, import, market or distribute candy, fruit and all flavored cigarettes. According to health and federal authorities, flavored cigarettes are more appealing to youth and simply encourages smoking. It doesn’t take a ‘rocket scientist’ to see that flavored cigarettes are a gateway for children and young adults to become addicted to tobacco/nicotine.

Research studies have shown that 17 year-old smokers are three times as likely to use flavored cigarettes as opposed to those over 25 years of age. FDA officials have said that almost 90% of adult smokers start smoking as teenagers and this ban will help stop more than 3500 young people from even starting the smoking addiction.

It was this past June that President Barack Obama signed the law that allows the FDA to regulate the tobacco industry. Its authority includes the ability to ban certain products, reduce nicotine in tobacco products and block labels such “low tar” and “light.” The tobacco companies will also be required to cover the cartons with large and graphic warnings.

The law won’t allow the FDA to ban nicotine or tobacco outright, but the agency will be able to regulate what goes into tobacco products. It will be the responsibility of FDA to make the public aware of the ingredients and prohibit marketing campaigns, especially those geared toward children.

It is no secret that smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. Death and disease caused by smoking can be stopped by preventing children and adolescents from even starting to smoke. This latest step by FDA to remove flavored cigarettes from the marketplace will definitely reduce death and chronic illnesses caused by tobacco products.
