Drug Addiction Detox – 2 Effective Methods

August 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

The goal of a detoxification program should be to rid the body of all toxins that may be causing the biochemical imbalances in the body. This includes any drugs, as well as dietary and environmental toxins.

Withdrawal symptoms will vary depending on the toxins in the body and your overall health condition. If the detox is done correctly, the withdrawal symptoms will be minimized.

In some cases you should not attempt to detox on your own. For instance, in cases of severe alcoholism, withdrawal can be life-threatening. You could experience the DTs (delirium tremens) and should be under the care of a professional addiction treatment facility.

Also, if you have been taking any benzodiazapenes, such as Valium or Xanax, seizures could occur so they should be under professional care.

A drug treatment program should offer various detox options. Two of these possibilities are listed below.

Virtual Reality and Coping Skills

May 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

Most addicts have a difficult time coping with life, so here is a new idea to think about for drug addiction treatment . . .

A new study by University of Houston Associate Professor Patrick Bordnick found that a virtual reality (VR) environment can provide the climate necessary to spark an alcohol craving so that patients can practice how to say “no” in a realistic and safe setting.

He investigated VR as a tool for assessing and treating addictions. He studied 40 alcohol-dependent people who were not receiving treatment (32 men and eight women). Wearing a VR helmet, each was guided through 18 minutes of virtual social environments that included drinking.

The participant’s drink of choice was included in each scene. Using a game pad, each rated his or her cravings and attention to the alcohol details in each room. Each then was interviewed following the experience.

“What we found was that the VR environments were real enough that their cravings were intensified. So, now we can develop coping skills, practice them in those very realistic environments until those skills are working tools for them to use in real life,” Bordnick said.

Oprah and David Sheff are Wrong!

April 11th, 2008 · No Comments

David Sheff, author of the book, Beautiful Boy, was a guest on the Oprah show this week. About half way through the program where they are discussing drug treatment programs, Oprah states that “relapse is a part of the treatment” and David Sheff concurs.

This is not true!

Relapse does not have to be a part of treatment in recovery but this is what most people believe.

When I read the book, I could see where the author had spent a lot of time and research trying to get answers to help solve his son’s drug addiction. Unfortunately he did not find the right people who had the answers.

My research shows that most drug treatment centers have a low success rate of 25% or less but it is possible to have success rates above 75% using methods that address the whole person – body, mind and spirit. This is where conventional treatment programs fail.

Some of the resources that people should review are:

Addiction Solution From Eckhart Tolle

March 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

Eckhart Tolle bookEckhart Tolle, author of “A New Earth – Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose“, mentions a solution for addictions on page 246 – 248 of his book.

He refers to an addiction as “an energy field that periodically takes you over completely”. The voice in your head then becomes the voice of the addiction.

Here is a tip – “when you notice the compulsive need arising in you, stop and take three conscious breaths. This generates awareness.” (which is one of the key elements in the book) “Then for a few minutes be aware of the compulsive urge itself as an energy field inside you.”

Feel this desire consciously. Take more conscious breaths and be aware of the compulsive urges. As your awareness grows, Mr. Tolle states that your addictive patterns will weaken and eventually dissolve.

Community Addiction Recovery Association

(CARA)

This is a real life success story of how an organization is making a difference in society by offering an addiction treatment program that works.

Carolyn Reuben acupuncture detoxificationIn 1995, under the leadership and vision of Carolyn Reuben, LAc, CARA became a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and began providing acupuncture detoxification services at the Chemical Dependency Center for Women (now Strategies for Change).

Since then CARA has added nutrition education, targeted nutritional supplements, healthy meal preparation, and several mind-body integration techniques.

CARA’s services are now provided at numerous facilities throughout the Sacramento Region, including Sacramento County’s Drug Court Program.

In an article printed in the January 2007  Townsend Letter, Carolyn Reuben stated:

“We believe that there is a disconnect between what science knows an addict needs and what society provides as treatment. Yes, addicts need behavior modification training. They also need mental health counseling.  And a drug-free place to live, and a job with a living wage. Yet, even before all that, they need brain repair at the molecular level.

Reuben continues and gives more details of the program.
